We have been working with our partners over the weekend to try to help the flood victims.

My response is focused on those areas.

I've been watching the progress on the road, and the work being done on the river with the aid organizations.

I'm very clear.

You know what we don't need? Floods like these.

And we don't need to see them, we don't need to see the devastation, we don't need to see the suffering.

That's the American way.

But you know, I know the people of Victoria, British Columbia, they don't want that to happen, so I understand the pain that they feel.

I hope, as I've been traveling in the USA and looking at how we can make this community stronger, I'm getting closer to those people's need.

They deserve better.

And this will give them better opportunities and more security.

For the record, my response has been not only to help the people of Victoria, who've been asking for more help and more assistance, but I've been traveling around Australia, Canada and the world to try to do the same.

I've spoken to people from as far away as China and many other places. And I've talked to leaders, including our new prime minister who's going to come up here in the UK for the Olympics.

And I've been in touch with some of the top businesses in the world, particularly technology companies and banks.

There are a great many countries that have already announced their assistance. I met with leaders from Australia, New Zealand and many other countries.

And what I think we're seeing is real hope for the American people and a genuine American willingness to make a change.

There has been talk for months of changing the name of the controversial Riverside Park project in the Anaheim River Valley that drew protests last year.

With the votes Tuesday night, Orange County Council members approved the project, with an 11-0 vote. The council voted to move forward with the project, a $70 million replacement project that would bring in stormwater and sewer replacement systems.

The council is expected to hold additional public comment sessions next week.

"When the council came together, it looked as if they were going to approve this, despite so many residents coming out against it," said Orange County Supervisor of Selectman Ed Reyes.

The council passed a resolution Tuesday evening that allows the City of Orange's planning department to take up stormwater and sewer replacement projects that have to be approved by the public. Councilwoman Nancy Gonzalez-Gonzalez, who proposed the resolution for the council, said the council's decision came after a year of heated discussions about stormwater and sewer project names.

The council vote Tuesday also cleared the way for the planning department to draft additional plans for the replacement project that have not already been developed in the public discussion. They will be the city's first environmental impact reports for the project and need to be approved by the public for approval.

Council President Jeff Adachi called Adachi a "real hero" for leading the council in opposing the proposed name change for the replacement project, which was called Project X.

The $70 million replacement project is meant to reduce flooding in one of the area's largest cities, and critics say the public safety benefits of the project are far outweighed by the project's safety issues.

"If you've got a problem, that's your problem. If I'm in an airplane crash, that's my problem," said community organizer Jim White. "So let's go into the conversation about how to move forward. If we want a new name, let's get in the conversation."
